Renewable energy: Anaerobic digestion
Thursday, 13 May 2010
When pig manure is stored in an oxygen-free environment, as found in a tank or lagoon, naturally occurring bacteria continue the digestion process started in the pigs’ gut, breaking down undigested feedstocks and releasing gas. In the absence of oxygen anaerobic bacteria dominate and the principle gases released are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), this is anaerobic digestion and the mixture of gases is referred to as biogas.

Renewable energy: Biomass
Saturday, 28 November 2009
Biomass most often refers to organic matter such as timber and crops grown specifically to be burnt to heat water. Biomass also refers to agricultural by-products such as straw, grain husks, forest products, waste wood and animal wastes such as slurry and chicken litter.

Renewable energy: Heat pumps
Saturday, 28 November 2009
There are several types of heat pump. All use the same basic principle of extracting heat from an external source and concentrating it to obtain a higher temperature, usually then applied to water for domestic heating and hot water.

Renewable energy: Solar
Saturday, 28 November 2009
Solar Thermal systems use direct heat from the sun. The technology is well developed with a large choice of equipment to suit many applications.
Solar panels or collectors are fitted to roofs and collect heat from the sun’s radiation.
