A thriving English red meat industry makes a net contribution of £1.67 billion to the economy making it crucial to a swift recovery, a new study has found.

The principle of the Innovation Fund is to provide pump priming cash for new and innovative ideas. These could include home grown ideas from within the farm or technologies not currently used in the English pig industry from another sector or overseas. The innovation fund may also provide funding to quantify a new process on farm which may provide efficiency and savings in labour. The guidance notes and application form have recently been updated and BPEX are calling for new applications to be submitted by Friday 10th September.

A new member has joined the board of the British Pig Executive (BPEX), representing the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA). Richard Martin is a Regional Director with Grampian, responsible for the Cookstown slaughter plant in Northern Ireland and the Case Bacon processing plant in Somerset. He has been in the industry for the last 39 years and has held management positions with the Harris Pork & Bacon Group, DBC Food Services and Hygrade Chilled Foods.

A survey by the British Pig Executive (BPEX) questioned more than 500 people at the BBC Good Food Show using four different packs of pork and asked people to identify the country of origin.

A healthier sausage specifically designed to have a lower salt level has won top prize in a competition run by the British Pig Executive (BPEX). The winner, The Country Butcher from Gloucestershire, beat stiff competition to win the title of Foodservice Sausage of the Year 2006. The annual competition was open to butchers and caterers across the country and three finalists chosen from each of the five categories for the final cook-off at Butchers' Hall in London on Tuesday, 17 October 2006.

Britain's pig industry is heading for yet another bumper year on the export market says the British Pig Executive (BPEX). Last year about 77,000 breeding pigs went abroad, worth about £9.3 million to British breeders and this year it looks as though the trade will break the £10 million barrier. One of the best markets for British breeding stock this year is Russia and shipments are now starting to go to China as well following the opening of that market.

A small but important change is going to be taking place in the pig slaughtering industry from September 4. The UK is moving into line with the rest of the EU by scrapping the table rebates and adopting a flat rate 2% rebate which will have a direct effect on producer carcase weights. Britain obtained a derogation in the 1980s and continued to use tables which gave slightly different figures according to the slaughter weight of pigs.

Belly pork is climbing high in the charts as sales soar according to figures just released by the British Pig Executive (BPEX). The figures, produced by TNS Worldpanel, show sales over the last 52 weeks are up nearly 12 per cent in terms of volume and 10.5 per cent in value.
