The way has opened for export of UK pig meat and breeding pigs to China, with two landmark agreements today.
Formal agreement of the export health certificate for export of pig meat from the UK to China will be confirmed to the UK’s Business Minister Vince Cable today by the Chinese authorities.
This means exports from approved plants can commence and it opens up the world’s largest market to UK pig producers, after a number of years’ work by BPEX in conjunction with Defra, UKTI and the Chinese authorities.

In the provisional June 2010 census the total number of pigs declined by almost two per cent. This was mainly driven by a reduction in the number of fattening pigs of two per cent year on year to 3.2 million.

The Innovation Fund: Encouraging new techniques for the future, today

The principle of the Innovation Fund is to provide pump priming cash for new and innovative ideas. These could include home grown ideas from within the farm or technologies not currently used in the English pig industry from another sector or overseas. The innovation fund may also provide funding to quantify a new process on farm which may provide efficiency and savings in labour. The guidance notes and application form have recently been updated and BPEX are calling for new applications to be submitted by Friday 10th September.

Moves by BPEX to open the Chinese market to British pig meat are to take on a new importance according to the latest forecasts.
The International Meat Market Review predicts stronger demand for pig meat from Asia during the second half of 2010, particularly from China and Hong Kong and the lifting of H1N1 trade bans in China will help this further.
