Latest figures published by Defra recorded a 1% decline in UK clean pig slaughterings in April, to 937,200 head. However, with heavier carcase weights, total pig meat production in April increased 1% on the year to 79,000 tonnes.

According to the April census results published by Statistics Denmark, total pig numbers increased to 12.3 million head. This was 2% higher compared with the second quarter of 2013. The breeding herd remained almost unchanged, with a marginal fall in the total number of breeding pigs.

In April, EU pig prices recovered from the sharp ASF-related declines in February and early March. Provisional figures showed that the EU pig price averaged around €163.50 per 100kg in April, up around €8 from the previous month.
Russian imports fall due to ban on EU pork

Russian pork imports in the first quarter of this year were 22% down on a year earlier at 85,000 tonnes. This follows Russia’s blocking of imports of pork from the EU in early February, after the African Swine Fever cases in Lithuania and Poland.
